Be Inspired: Audrey Hepburn Edition

@

As one of the world’s most famous actresses, Audrey Hepburn set the stage for drastic changes in the way the world viewed women, style, and beauty. She was famous for movies such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina, and Roman Holiday; Three movies in which her wardrobe was the centerpiece. It is impossible to flawlessly recreate her elegance in dressing, but she taught us some very valuable lessons, such as dressing in clothing that properly fits your body shape and always appearing poised.

Let’s begin by discussing the fashions she popularized. Probably her most famous piece is the Little Black Dress. Coco Chanel first designed the signature dress during the 1920s, but it had never been worn the way Audrey wore it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. In fact, I have a poster of her looking in the windows at Tiffany’s in her black gloves and little black dress. Her presentation of the classic LBD made it a staple in every girl’s wardrobe.

Another classic look that Audrey made famous was her black capris and close fitting clothing, like in Sabrina and Funny Face. She would pair them with tight-fitting tops and black flats, which was an unusual look for the fifties and sixties. Audrey Hepburn did not attempt to hide her tiny body. You may have seen Gap bring back this “Back in Black” look in the past few seasons.

Audrey Hepburn also accessorized exquisitely. Long gloves, big hats, jewelry, sunglasses, and scarves were all worn by the actress constantly. She would constantly over-accessorize, by most people’s standards, but was able to pull it off in an absolutely stunning way.

Just remember: Audrey was poised, elegant, healthy, and always selfless. To carry Audrey’s beauty with you, love yourself and the world. See grace in everything.

The Proper Packing Guide

@

As a girl that spends a lot of time travelling, I felt that packing would be the perfect topic to tackle today. Packing a suitcase is of vital importance for anyone travelling because; after all, no one wants to be stuck in a far away town or foreign country without their most important things!
There’s an art to packing a suitcase and I’ve mastered being able to do it quickly. It can be a very overwhelming process with all of the laundry and thinking through that needs to take place. But, don’t let the scare of the ordeal frighten you into throwing random clothing into a bag! This will leave you with mismatched outfits, random clothing, and the possibility of forgetting what you really need to bring with you.

The first thing you need to do is consider where you’re going. Check the weather and consider the activities you’ll be partaking in while on vacation. If you’re planning on going to the Alps, then there’s no sense in packing cute pumps and your favorite new summer dress. Likewise, if you’re spending time in the Hamptons, why take a coat?

Carry On

The carry-on bag you take is incredibly important, especially if you’re flying. But even if you’re driving or taking a train to your destination, you need to have a medium sized bag that is with you at almost all times. This should carry everything to keep you entertained while in flight, of course, but also pack everything you absolutely cannot live without or is expensive, in case your suitcase is lost or gets on the wrong plane.
Zune, iPod, mp3 player
Laptop if necessary
Cell Phone Charger
Camera
Medications
One top
Pair of Jeans
Underwear
Sweater
Some sort of pouch to keep trip collage materials in (tickets, stubs, etc.)

Suitcase

@

Your suitcase should be big enough to fit all that you take but well-sized so your belongings stay in place without falling around and getting beat up. Always pack extra clothing, but don’t stuff your suitcase because typically you will come back from vacation with more than you left with! Another thing to keep in mind while packing is the aesthetic look of suitcase. I find it incredibly helpful to have a bag that sticks out when on a luggage carousel. Bright or patterned bags are good for this reason.
Basic Dresses – Casual dresses are a travelling essential. For fall travelling, throw on a cardigan and a pair of leggings, plus accessories. A dress that is made from fabric that doesn’t wrinkle is a huge plus.
Tops – tanks, cute shirts – Those who know me are aware of the fact that I hardly ever wear t-shirts. These may be easy to travel in because they’re so casual and comfortable, but it’s very easy to look bland while wearing one. Pack tees if you can accessorize them well. Be sure to put in cute tops that work for day-to-night looks or to throw on with jeans.
Jeans – Denim is INCREDIBLY important always. Be sure to pack your shorts, skinnies and flares. They are another travel essential because they can be good for day-to-day activities with lots of walking, or for nightwear when paired with heels.
Skirts – If you have room, skirts can be very handy to bring with you on vacation. They’re an easy and comfortable fix. Try to stick with basic neutrals that can be paired with your tops.
Cardigans – I cannot stress the importance of cardigans enough! You know the feeling of being cold in a theater or outdoors at night. They’re small enough to put in your day bag and a very cute way to layer an outfit.
Jacket or Coat – Try to pack a cute a versatile jacket or coat that is easy to layer. You’ll need it.
Too Many Pairs of Underoos – self explanatory.
Swim Suit – Of course this is a little area-specific, but if you’re going to be staying in a hotel with a pool or going to the beach, of course you’ll need your swim suit!
Sleepwear – Usually you’ll need to bring a few sets of shorts and tanks, or whatever you enjoy sleeping in. I almost always forget to pack them, and trust me! It’s important!
Shoes – Pumps, ballet flats, sandals, boots - For travelling, you’re going to need a nice, trendy pair of pumps that go with almost anything you packed. You never know when you’ll need to quickly dress up, which a quality pair of heels will do. Ballet flats are crucial while on trips, particularly on days that you need to do walking. They’re a chic alternative to tennis shoes. Sandals are important as well. More than one pair will come in handy. Anything from hip studded slip-ons to flip flips are nice. Also, since fall is approaching, boots are important. They may be a better choice to wear on your travel day because they take up lots of room in a suitcase.
Day Bag – When you’re out and about, you need a bag to put many things in, such as your camera, jacket, notebook, wallet, and anything else you may be carrying with you. Use a stylish bag that zips, because large bags are particularly easy to steal from when you’re travelling.
Smaller Bag or Wristlet – Instead of taking your large travel bag when you go out for the night, be sure to pack a simple wristlet or small clutch to keep your vitals in. It’s easy to keep track of, but still refrain from keeping your important information in it while on vacation.
Sunglasses – This is a season specific choice, but they’re very necessary when participating in outdoor activities with lots of sun. Sunglasses are very easy to lose, so it’s best to pack two cheap pairs. Target?
Accessories – versatile earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces to dress up any outfit.

Beauty

@

Beauty Bags are imperative for all female travelers. Having a separate bag (which could be located inside your suitcase, of course) for your beauty products is needed. Who wants all their beauty products to accidentally open and ruin all of your clothing? This has happened to me, and trust me, I learned my lesson.
Makeup Necessities – It’s always best to not travel with loose powders because they get very messy once you open them, but most of your other makeup and brushes should be travel-friendly. Every girl has different needs as far as makeup goes, but be sure to pack your foundation, blush or bronzer, eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara, brushes and makeup remover.
Skin Care – Sunscreen, cleanser, moisturizer – Don’t ever make up excuses for not wearing sunscreen. Ever. I wear it on a daily basis and it’s vitally important. After all, tanning now is classified as a “Group 1 Carcinogen.” Cleansers and moisturizers are equally important for keeping your skin looking fresh when you’re not on your daily eating or exercising routine, as well.
Hair Care – Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair Spray, Heat Protector – I always forget my shampoo and conditioner, so try to keep it in mind! Be sure to pack all you need to style your hair, such as brushes or bobby pins.
Flat Iron or Curling Iron

What do you do differently when packing for vacation? Any other tips or tricks? Leave a comment!

How to Wear Oxford Pumps

@ Anthropologie

I bought a pair of grey Oxford pumps (from Alloy, I believe.) about half a year ago. I put them away and wore them once, but recently I got them back out. I had been unable to find an outfit to make them work with. It seemed like everything in my closet just looked silly with them! So here’s a guide to wearing Oxford pumps. You’ll be surprised..they can be worn with almost anything.

First off, there are so many forms of Oxford heels. They come in so many colors and styles. Almost all of them are lace-up, which, after all, is what makes them real oxfords. Check out places like Macy’s, Baker’s, and Piperlime to find a type of shoe you like.

I have found that Oxford Pumps go with many things. I’ve read that it’s poor taste to wear them with a skirt above your knee, but I disagree. I find the look of a skirt, leggings or no leggings, and a shoe that covers your foot to be rather cute. So, with the help of Polyvore, here’s a look to pair your adorable new Oxfords with.

I also enjoy wearing Oxfords with short dresses and tights. I feel that when they’re worn with a longer dress, it just covers up too much with the shoes and dress. They can be paired with many different types of dresses.

The third way I’ve begun to wear Oxfords is with skinny jeans. I feel that they look very classy with the proper outfit and incredibly stylish.

So have fun with your Oxfords..there are loads of ways to wear them. A nice pair is a good investment because they are more versatile and classic than you think. What do you think? Do you own any/what do you wear them with?

Classic Fall Pieces

It’s that time of year again! It’s almost the end of July, which means fall is right around the corner. Maybe this post is a bit premature, but I’m enormously excited for the autumn season! We all have so much to look forward to. School, fall trends, etc.. The following is a list of things every girl should purchase or bring out of their closet again before the end of summer or beginning of fall. They aren’t in any particular order; each item is of equal importance!

10) Fitted Blazer
Blazers are very important, due to their versatility. Blazers are great purchases because they can be paired with dresses and leggings, jeans, or skirts. They also offer practicality because they cover your arms to keep in warmth during the fall and winter months. A fitted look is best because it’ll stay classic for longer and can be paired with more, although the boyfriend blazer is also very popular this fall.

Splurge: Twenty8Twelve Calandra Jacket, BlueFly $222.70
Deal: Lux Little Brother Blazer, Urban Outfitters $68.00

9) One Shoulder Dress
One shoulder dresses were seen all over the fall 2009 runways and they’re a very wearable trend. They look sleek and sophisticated. Shoulders are an incredibly alluring part of a woman’s body and as reported by fashion magazines all over the world, are growing in popularity! Apparently it is now very hip to show them off or draw strong attention to them. So grab anything that is either shoulder-less or has very structured shoulders.

Splurge: Alexander Wang Goddess Dress, Sax Fifth Avenue $590.00
Deal: Free People 'A Night's Party' Dress, Nordstrom $68.00

8) Over-the-Knee Boots
I was thrilled when I heard that over the knee boots are all the rage. College Fashion reported that once they were seen on Blake Lively on Gossip Girl, retailers went nuts. They are very fashion-forward when worn properly. They’re going to be in loads of stores this fall and work well with leggings, jeans, and skirts.

Splurge: Steve Madden Insayne Boot, Nordstrom $208.90
Deal: Chinese Laundry Turbo Boot, Chinese Laundry $89.99

7) One-of-a-Kind Bag
I believe a purse should speak volumes about your personality. Brights and neons are very popular as of late, and your taste should be perfectly represented in your purse choice. Colors tell a lot about a person and can really jazz up a dismal, fall wardrobe.

Splurge: Marc by Marc Jacobs Satchel Bag, Net-a-Porter $548.00
Deal: Jessica Simpson Metropolitan Satchel, Piperlime $108.00

6) Cardigan
Personally, I think everyone should own as many cardigans as possible! I’m dreadfully obsessed with them. They’ve gone from being an elementary school teacher look to a cute and fashionable staple that should be in every girl’s closet. They can change your summer tops into fall tops, as well as provide warmth in those cool fall mornings. They also can be dressed up as well as dressed down, and come in so many fantastic colors.

Splurge: Hayden Cashmere Sweater, BluFly $109.65
Deal: Ruffle Trimmed Cardigan, Gap $49.50

5) A-Symmetrical Vest
Since the tough look is very popular as of late, you can imagine how popular biker vests have become. The rough, dangerous looking pieces paired with stiletto heels and a tight jean is the way to go. Anything with studs, zippers, and lots of harsh black that you bought last season is still very hip. Keep it out and pair it with something to fit the fall weather.

Splurge: Juicy Couture Motorcycle Hoodie Vest, Saks Fifth Avenue $148.00
Deal: (Minus The) Leather Vest, Express $88.00

4) Great Jeans
When it comes to jeans, it’s hard to go wrong. I, personally, am excited to go jean shopping. Beachy-wide-leg jeans, super skinny dark jeans and ripped-to-hell jeans are all going to be seen in loads of stores. When it comes to jeans, it’s a must have for fall wear.

Splurge: True Religion Gwen Skinny Jean, Shop Bop $216.00
Deal: Zelda Skinny Leg Cuffed Jean, Express $69.50

3) Layered Necklaces
Layers upon layers of necklaces and jewelry will remain as popular as it has been the past few seasons. This big, attention-grabbing look dresses up any outfit that seems too plain.

Splurge: Juicy Couture "Chain Swag Drama" Necklace, Bloomingdales $178.00
Deal: Layered Chain Necklace, Charlotte Russe $6.99

2) Leggings
I cannot stress the importance of a great pair of leggings for cool weather. They can transform your summery dresses into fall wear to be worn time and time again. There are many different kinds; plain neutrals, bright colors, and patterned. Try H&M or Express, both have the nicest leggings you’ll ever wear, I promise you. There's really no reason to post any photos or links of leggings to splurge on because these two stores will give you the best leggings you need. Don't waste your money on expensive tights because there's no sense in it!

Deal: Metallic Ankle Tight, Express $19.50

1) Classic Peacoat
A pea coat should be a staple in your closet forever. There are many different kinds; long, short, different colors, etc. One that shows off your body and fits it well is going to be needed once the weather turns downhill. Even if the weather is bad, it doesn’t mean you have to drown your body in a warm, massive coat! Get a cute, fitted one that will last. I know I’ve got my eye on a few select super bright coats for the coming cool weather!

Splurge: Andrew Marc Double Breasted Peacoat, Nordstrom $349.99
Deal: Wool Belted Coat, Express $198.00

Moved.

I decided for more professional blogging, it would be better to move to blogger, as oppossed to Tumblr. I still have an account on tumblr, so be sure to follow my more random thoughts over there. : )
